Paint Calculator - How Much Paint Do I Need?
Calculate exactly how much paint you need for your painting project. Our free paint calculator accounts for wall area, paint coverage rates, number of coats, and waste factors to ensure you buy the right amount of paint and avoid costly mistakes.
How to Use the Paint Calculator
- Measure your room: Enter the length, width, and height of the room in feet. For irregular rooms, break them into rectangular sections and calculate each separately.
- Choose paint type: Select the appropriate coverage rate based on your paint type. Interior paints typically cover 350-400 square feet per gallon, while exterior paints cover 300-350.
- Select number of coats: Most projects require 2 coats. Use 3 coats for dark colors over light surfaces or when covering stains.
- Review results: The calculator shows gallons needed with a 10% waste factor included. Always buy slightly more paint than calculated to account for touch-ups and future needs.
Pro tip: Measure twice, paint once. Accurate measurements prevent expensive mistakes and ensure you have enough paint to complete your project.
Understanding Your Paint Calculation
Our paint calculator uses industry-standard formulas to determine exactly how much paint you need. Understanding the calculation helps you make informed decisions about your painting project.
Wall Area Calculation
The calculator first determines your total wall area using the formula: Wall Area = 2 × (Length × Height) + 2 × (Width × Height) - (Length × Width)
This accounts for all four walls while subtracting the floor and ceiling areas that don't need painting. The result gives you the total square footage of wall surface.
Net Paintable Area
Not all wall area actually gets painted. Windows, doors, and other openings reduce the paintable surface. Our calculator assumes 20% of wall area consists of openings, leaving 80% as net paintable area.
Example: A 12×10×8 foot room has 416 square feet of wall area. After accounting for openings, you have approximately 333 square feet of actual paintable surface.
Coverage and Coats
Paint coverage varies by type and surface. Interior latex paints typically cover 350-400 square feet per gallon, while exterior paints cover 300-350 square feet. The calculator multiplies the paintable area by the number of coats needed.
Waste Factor
Painting always involves some waste from spills, brush cleaning, and touch-ups. Our calculator adds a 10% waste factor to ensure you have enough paint. For larger projects or inexperienced painters, consider increasing this to 15%.
Paint Calculator FAQ
How accurate is the paint calculator?
Our paint calculator uses industry-standard formulas and realistic waste factors for high accuracy. However, actual paint usage can vary based on surface texture, paint quality, and application method. Always buy 10-15% more paint than calculated to account for variables and future touch-ups.
What paint coverage rate should I use?
Coverage rates vary by paint type: premium interior paints cover 400-450 sq ft/gallon, standard interior paints cover 350-400 sq ft/gallon, and exterior paints cover 300-350 sq ft/gallon. Always check the paint can label for the manufacturer's specified coverage rate.
How many coats of paint do I need?
Most painting projects require 2 coats for proper coverage and durability. Use 3 coats when painting dark colors over light surfaces, covering stains, or painting previously unpainted surfaces. Primer counts as a coat if you're using it.
Should I buy more paint than calculated?
Yes, always buy slightly more paint than your calculation shows. Our calculator includes a 10% waste factor, but additional paint ensures you can do touch-ups, allows for mixing variations between cans, and provides paint for future repairs. It's better to have leftover paint than run short mid-project.
How do I calculate paint for ceilings?
For ceiling painting, calculate the ceiling area separately (length × width) and add it to your wall calculations. Ceilings typically require the same coverage rate as walls but may need an extra coat for uniform appearance. Use a paint designed for ceilings if available, as it reduces splatter.
What if my room has irregular shapes?
Break irregular rooms into rectangular sections and calculate each separately, then add the results together. For complex shapes, use the largest rectangle that fits and add 20-30% extra for irregular areas. When in doubt, consult a professional painter for complex room geometries.
How much does paint cost per gallon?
Paint costs vary widely: budget interior paint costs $20-30 per gallon, mid-range paint costs $35-50 per gallon, and premium paint costs $50-80 per gallon. Exterior paints are typically $40-70 per gallon. Factor in paint cost when calculating your total project budget.
Do I need primer before painting?
Primer is recommended for new drywall, stained surfaces, dark colors over light, or when changing paint types. It improves adhesion, hides stains, and can reduce the number of top coats needed. Our calculator doesn't include primer in the calculation, so add primer gallons separately if needed.
Paint Calculation Tips & Best Practices
- Measure accurately: Use a tape measure and measure to the nearest inch for best results
- Account for texture: Textured surfaces use more paint than smooth walls
- Consider lighting: Natural light can affect how paint appears - test samples in your space
- Plan for multiple rooms: Calculate each room separately and buy paint in batches to ensure color consistency
- Store leftover paint properly: Keep paint in a cool, dry place for future touch-ups
- Check paint age: Old paint may have separated - stir thoroughly before using
- Weather matters: Don't paint in extreme temperatures or high humidity
- Safety first: Use proper ventilation and protective equipment when painting
